How to Wear Red Lipstick to the Office

Is it just me or has anyone else always wanted to wear red lipstick to the office? There’s just something about the color that makes me feel powerful and like a #girlboss but I always avoided it since I didn’t want anyone to think I’m wearing too much makeup and that it’s inappropriate for work. Now that I’ve been working at a start-up for the past 4 months, I’ve become more comfortable with my office style and decided to give it a try and finally found the perfect red lip look that’s office-appropriate but will make you feel glamorous and chic. Here’s how:

Step 1: Lip Scrub & Moisturize

For any lip look that involves matte lipstick, I highly recommend using a lip scrub to remove dead skin and a good lip balm to moisturize! It makes a huge difference and can make wearing matte lipstick so much more comfortable.

Step 2: Apply With Fingers 

Skip the lip liner (for now!) and apply your lipstick with your fingers or lip brush. This way, you’re getting less pigment onto your lips and can control how bold you want the lip color to be. I’ve noticed when I wear red lipstick straight from the tube, the color is so much more “red” and can draw too much attention to your lips – which is something I want to avoid when I’m at the office.

Step 3: Apply Lip Liner & Blend 

This step is optional but I can’t wear lipstick without lip liner! I tried to apply it first before staining my lips with the lipstick but it just seems to come out too bold and looks strange when my lip color is less pigmented than usual. By applying it last and blending, you still get that sharp and clean lip look but it looks so much more natural and subtle. 

That’s it! Super simple right? Try it the next time you want to switch up your lip look and make sure the rest of your makeup is simple so that way it looks office-appropriate.
