Back in 2012, my New Year’s resolution was to live a healthier lifestyle. Typical right? Our entire culture is obsessed with this resolution and sadly promotes dieting and “quick weight-loss” schemes instead of working out and eating clean. Well, I wanted to do it the right way and have the weight stay off once and for all. Guess what? I succeeded. It still feels strange to say that but I was able to achieve my goal and have been living a healthy lifestyle for two years and counting.
Yes I’m one of those people that goes to the gym regularly, owns cute workout clothes, and enjoys the benefits of clean eating. I never thought I would be that person. I used to be the girl that ran out of breath after walking up a flight of stairs at school and going out to eat 4-5 times a week. Everyone always asks me the question: How did you do it?!
Just like with all other success stories in life, the key to it is failing.
I failed so much at the resolution that it came to a point where I no longer cared about failing because I was getting up to try again each time. The first couple months was the hardest and I wanted to quit so badly, but no matter how bad things got, I didn’t. I focused on my goal and did what I had to do, even though the easier choice would’ve been to quit. I did whatever it took to motivate myself from looking at inspiration on Instagram fitness groups to researching healthy eating techniques. I knew that eventually one day my efforts would be worth it.
I was right. I ended up losing around 30 pounds, got rid of my eating out addiction, and stopped looking at the scale obsessively. I realized that if you fall in love with the process, then the results will follow. Most importantly, after years of looking at the mirror and not liking what I see, I was finally able to be proud of myself.
Whatever resolution you’re trying to achieve for the new year, make sure to not be afraid to fail and start over again. Remember that mistakes are okay as long as it doesn’t defeat you and have you quit. Do whatever it takes to motivate yourself and don’t listen to people that don’t believe in your goals. Eliminate all negativity and listen to your own inner voice. 2015 is your year. You got this.
Until next time lovelies,
-Ruya
