If you follow me on Instagram, you might’ve noticed how much I’ve talking about my struggles with hair loss recently and the products that I’ve used to overcome it. It’s become such a hot topic on there and I get questions about it daily! I thought it was time to create an entire post dedicated to my hair loss routine – everything from hair care, heat styling, and healthy hair habits to reduce further damage. Hair loss is such a complicated topic and it’s different for everyone but most of my hair loss happened in the front of my scalp, near my temples, my hairline and it was a result from severe stress. Here’s my routine:
Shampoo & Conditioner
It took me a while to find a good shampoo and conditioner that won’t result in further hair loss in the shower. While I was going through the worst of my hair loss, I noticed I had an itchy, dry scalp, dandruff, and lots of irritation. To help with this – I alternate between Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo/Conditioner (it’s pricey so I stock up when it’s on sale at Ulta) and Bondi Boost Hair Growth Shampoo/Conditioner. The Alterna really helps heal my damaged hair and gives it moisture while the Bondi Boost helps clear away the dandruff and itchy scalp but can be very harsh and leave my hair dry. That’s why I find that it’s good to switch back and forth between these 2 products and my hair is reacting to it well!
Saying No To Dry Shampoo & Styling Products
Believe it or not, I STOPPED using dry shampoo and a majority of styling products. I don’t want my scalp irritated and clogged with unnecessary products that can further increase my hair loss. Ever since I stopped dry shampoo and started washing my hair more, I noticed my scalp is no longer as irritated and itchy. This is different for everyone but it’s worth a try! I only wash my hair 3x a week compared to 1-2x a week (when I was using dry shampoo) so it’s not a huge change in my life.
Vegamour Gro+ Advanced Hair Serum
The Gro+ Advanced Hair Serum from Vegamour has truly changed my hair. I was super skeptical trying this product because I didn’t think a few drops of this serum on my scalp once a day would do anything. I WAS WRONG. Within the first 2 weeks, I noticed my hair stopped shedding (a miracle since my hair sheds every time I shower, brush my hair or put it up in a ponytail) and by week 4, my bald spots were filling in. This is my first time using a hair serum with hemp extract in it and that’s all natural. Hemp extract is known for reducing irritation on the scalp and helping to create a more healthy environment for it to grow. As you can see in my before and after photos, my scalp loves it!
They were kind enough to give my readers 20% off their products with the code “Ruyakiraccc”. They have up to a 90 day return policy so I felt good trying out this product and knowing that I can at least get my money back if it doesn’t work.
Changing My Hair Habits
I also made small changes to my hair routine which I think makes a big impact overall. I switched to a silk pillow case to help with my curls getting tangled (which used to result in more hair loss for me), no longer putting my hair in tight ponytails, using this scalp massager in the shower to stimulate hair growth and using the It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask once a week to help repair damage.
Also a major change I did was getting rid of my Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer (that everyone keeps hyping up) and switching to the more gentle Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush. The Amika doesn’t pull my hair and leave it as damaged as the Revlon plus it takes me only 10 minutes to straighten my hair compared to 20-30 mins with the Revlon. It’s more expensive but worth it in my opinion. Highly recommend for curly hair girls!
