Before traveling for business, I thought the whole thing was so fun and glamorous. Who doesn’t want to stay at a hotel for free, have free meals, work on the go and even explore a new city (if there’s time, of course). Plus let’s admit it: people traveling for business just look a lot cooler at the airport since they’re probably dressed sharp cause they’re going to a meeting right after the flight lol. I quickly realized that the reality is much more different. Business travel can be quite hectic and a lot of times things don’t go as smoothly. After taking a few trips for my company, I’ve created my own set of rules that I always follow and thought I should share them for anyone that’s new to business travel and wants to be prepared:
1. A L W A Y S S T I C K T O A C A R R Y – O N
I know, it’s tempting to bring a large suitcase and bring everything with you “just in case” but it’s so much easier traveling with a carry-on. You won’t have to worry about your baggage getting lost, sometimes paying extra for a suitcase or wasting time at baggage claim. You can just grab your carry-on and head straight out of the airport. It’s made my life so much simpler!
2. P A C K V E R S A T I L E C L O T H I N G
Sometimes plans change when you travel on business so always pack clothing that can easily be worn for different occasions such as a black dress that can be dressed up or down or black dress pants that will go with many different tops.
3. K E E P Y O U R H A N D S F R E E W I T H A L A R G E T O T E
I honestly believe every girl should have a large tote that you can throw anything into, is good quality and will last years to come. Plus it looks a lot more put-together than a backpack and you can easily reach for your passport/boarding pass, store snacks or in my case…an extra pair of shoes and tops lol. I know, everyone swears by the Louis Vuitton Neverfull but in case you’re looking for something more budget-friendly I linked some below.
4. S H O R T T R I P ? G E T A B L O W – O U T
One of my favorite tricks whenever we have a company event or traveling on business for a few days is to get a blowout either the day before my flight or on that day. Drybar is my go-to spot and what’s convenient is that they have early morning appointments and get a great blow-out that will last for a few days so I won’t have to worry about doing my hair. I always bring a mini flat-iron and dry shampoo just for small touch ups but most of the time never use them.
5. H A V E A P R E – P A C K E D T O I L E T R Y B A G
If you know you’re going to be traveling frequently, always have a pre-packed toiletry bag which has all the essentials such as your makeup, shampoo/conditioner, Tylenol and other items that you would always need no matter where the trip is. This way, you’ll never forget anything and won’t have to rush to get ready the night or a few hours before your flight! I linked one of my favorites below which you can easily hang in your hotel bathroom and fits so many items.
